The buzz surrounding Eala has been building throughout the year, marked by her performance at the Australian Open in January, and a semi-final run in Berlin. She also achieved a notable victory over Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon. Following her Wimbledon performance, Eala received a presidential citation from Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the President of the Philippines.

Community Support and Tournament Preparations

The National Bank Open has taken steps to engage the Filipino community in Toronto. The tournament has scheduled Eala’s match on the same night as Leylah Fernandez, a Canadian player with Filipino heritage, which is seen as a significant event for the community. To further cater to fans, the tournament has even added chicken adobo, a Filipino dish, to its food offerings for Wednesday’s matches.

Jason Maglantay, senior director of ticket sales and services for Tennis Canada, highlighted the enthusiasm within the Filipino community for Eala’s participation. He observed the strong interest from his family and friends, as well as on social media platforms. Maglantay noted that the level of excitement for Eala in the sports realm among Filipinos is comparable to that for boxer Manny Pacquiao.

The Sobeys Stadium, which has a capacity of 10,077, is expected to see a significant portion of its audience on Wednesday night comprise fans of Filipino heritage. Maglantay estimates that eight out of ten fans could be of Filipino descent. Eala will also participate in doubles at the National Bank Open, partnering with Venus Williams.

Eala’s Journey and Recent Success

Eala’s tennis journey began at a young age, as she started training at the Rafael Nadal Academy in Manacor, Spain, at 13 years old as a scholar. She has achieved success in junior tennis, including winning the 2022 U.S. Open girls’ singles title, which was the first junior grand slam singles crown for the Philippines. She also secured junior doubles majors at the 2020 Australian Open and 2021 French Open.

Her recent victory at the DC Open saw her defeat Jessica Pegula, the top seed and World No. 3, in a three-set final with scores of 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. Pegula described Eala as “the future of the tour” during the tournament. Eala expressed gratitude for the support and recognition she has received, acknowledging the overwhelming nature of experiencing new milestones.

Eala is scheduled to play Alycia Parks at centre court in Toronto on Wednesday.
