Cardiff sees Arsenal dominate Manchester City in Community Shield
Arsenal secured a dominant 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield in Cardiff, marking a challenging start for new City manager Enzo Maresca. Goals from Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz, and Martin Ødegaard sealed the win for Mikel Arteta‘s side, which was described as a “stunning” performance by former Arsenal defender Martin Keown.
The match saw Arsenal take an early lead, with Calafiori scoring after just 24 seconds. Havertz doubled their advantage in the 28th minute, and Ødegaard added a third goal three minutes into the second half. This result is Arsenal’s biggest victory to nil against Manchester City since August 2014, also in the Community Shield. For City, it was their heaviest defeat to nil against an English side since a 4-0 loss in November 2024 against Tottenham.

Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, expressed some surprise at his team’s convincing performance, noting that playing in such a manner was “extremely impressive.” Maresca, who took over from Pep Guardiola this summer, downplayed the significance of the defeat, stating, “It’s a defeat that hurts us, but it’s just the beginning.”
Match Dominance and Player Performances
The underlying statistics highlighted Arsenal’s control over the game. The Gunners generated 2.19 expected goals (xG) compared to City’s 0.77, with none of Arsenal’s xG coming from set-pieces. This metric, which assesses the likelihood of chances resulting in goals, showed Arsenal finishing with nearly three times City’s total xG.
Christos Tzolis, one of Arsenal’s new signings, was a standout performer, playing the entire game and contributing two assists. He was involved in all three goals and made the most passes into the final third for Arsenal. His cross initiated the play that led to Calafiori’s early goal. Calafiori’s strike came after a brilliant pass from Myles Lewis-Skelly, who played a central role before being replaced by Martín Zubimendi. Lewis-Skelly’s involvement in the opening goal was particularly noted by Calafiori.

Another new face for Arsenal, Bruno Guimarães, also made his debut, wearing the No. 39 shirt. He was active in midfield before being substituted by Declan Rice at halftime. Arsenal’s squad depth was evident, with players like Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, and Viktor Gyokeres coming off the substitutes’ bench.
For Manchester City, Elliot Anderson, a summer signing, made his first appearance since the World Cup. Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin observed that Anderson “is not fitting brilliantly well yet.” City’s Erling Haaland also had his first run-out of the summer but struggled to make an impact, with one shot from distance saved by David Raya and another going wide.
Squad Changes and Season Outlook
Both clubs have seen significant activity in the transfer window. Manchester City swiftly agreed to a £116m deal for Elliot Anderson but have not made other first-team signings. They also saw Bernardo Silva and John Stones leave on free transfers, while Manuel Akanji, Nathan Ake, and James Trafford were sold for substantial fees. Key player Rodri is reportedly heading to Barcelona in a £65m deal, with Chelsea‘s Enzo Fernandez considered a potential replacement.

Arsenal, in contrast, have sold fringe players such as Leandro Trossard, Jakub Kiwior, and Christian Norgaard. They have strengthened their squad by signing first-team players Bruno Guimarães and Christos Tzolis, and making last season’s loanee Piero Hincapie a permanent acquisition. Nevin commented that Arsenal’s current strength is the result of “six years of build,” suggesting they are now better than last year.
The Community Shield result has led some to question City’s readiness for the upcoming season, especially in the post-Guardiola era. Former Scotland striker Ally McCoist noted that City received “a bit of a schooling” and that the situation is “concerning.” However, some fans and analysts suggest that pre-season results, including the Community Shield, do not always indicate future performance.
Historically, the Community Shield has not been a strong predictor of league success. Since the Premier League began in 1992-93, only eight of the 34 winners of the Charity Shield or Community Shield have gone on to win the league. Manchester City in 2018-19 and Manchester United in 2010-11 were the last teams to achieve this. Despite this, Arsenal’s captain Martin Ødegaard stated that the team showed their level and readiness for the season.

Arsenal’s stability in management, with Arteta remaining at the helm, contrasts with several other ‘big six’ rivals who have new managers this summer, including Maresca at City, Andoni Iraola at Liverpool, and Xabi Alonso at Chelsea. Manchester United‘s Michael Carrick and Tottenham‘s Roberto de Zerbi were appointed partway through last season. Sports data analysts at Opta have made Arsenal the Premier League favourites, giving Arteta’s side a 38% chance of lifting the trophy. Arsenal will begin their Premier League title defence at home to Coventry in Friday’s curtain-raiser.
