Senators Navigate Post-Tkachuk Era with Roster Adjustments and Emerging Prospects

Brady Tkachuk va beaucoup manquer à Tim Stützle

The departure of Brady Tkachuk to Florida came as a significant surprise to Tim Stützle, who had known Tkachuk since his early days in the National Hockey League (NHL). Stützle will now need to take on increased responsibilities for the Ottawa Senators.

Stützle, a 24-year-old German player, is expected to be considered for the captaincy role, which became vacant after Tkachuk joined his brother Matthew with the Panthers on June 22. Tkachuk’s move was facilitated by a non-movement clause in his contract.

Two months after the trade, Stützle spoke about Tkachuk’s exit, describing him as a close friend. Stützle acknowledged that Tkachuk will be missed but emphasized the need for the team to focus on its future in Ottawa. He noted that many players are committed to being in Ottawa.

Tkachuk’s Impact and Leadership

Stützle highlighted Tkachuk’s role in his own development, stating that Tkachuk took him under his wing when he was younger and made him feel welcome. He described Tkachuk as a good teammate and a very skilled player.

While Stützle has led the Senators in points for three of the last four seasons, Tkachuk brought leadership and toughness to the team. These qualities, according to Stützle, will need to be addressed in Ottawa.

Stützle explained that Tkachuk was a good leader, becoming captain at a young age, which is not always easy. He believes that the presence of other strong leaders on the team helped Tkachuk in that role.

Senators’ Roster Adjustments and Prospects

In exchange for Tkachuk, the Senators acquired the ninth and 25th overall picks in the 2026 NHL Draft, a top-10 protected first-round pick in the 2029 NHL Draft, and a second-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. General Manager Steve Staios expressed satisfaction with the return, considering the circumstances of the trade.

Following the trade, Staios made further moves. Two days later, the ninth overall pick was traded to the San Jose Sharks for 23-year-old winger William Eklund and prospects Kasper Halttunen and Brandon Svoboda. Eklund had been a seventh overall pick in the 2021 Draft.

The Senators also acquired Andre Burakovsky from the Chicago Blackhawks for a sixth-round pick in the 2027 Draft, and goaltender Samuel Ersson from the Maple Leafs for a fifth-round pick in the 2027 Draft. Burakovsky, 31, is entering the final year of a five-year contract with a salary cap hit.

On the free agent market, Ottawa extended veteran Claude Giroux for one year. Forward Nick Cousins signed a two-year extension. The team also retained defenseman Jordan Spence, a restricted free agent, with a four-year contract.

The Senators also solidified their goaltending depth behind Linus Ullmark by re-signing Leevi Merilainen to a one-year contract and extending Ersson for two years.

Staios indicated that the team is content with its work and believes in the internal talent available to step up. He noted that the team was eighth in the NHL in goals scored last year and is looking to find a true goal scorer.

Beyond Stützle, who is under contract until 2031, other potential captaincy candidates for the Senators include defensemen Jake Sanderson or Thomas Chabot.

Emerging Prospects for the Senators

The Senators’ prospect pool includes several promising players. Carter Yakemchuk, a defenseman selected seventh overall in 2024, played four NHL games last season and recorded two points. He also contributed two assists in one playoff game against the Carolina Hurricanes. Yakemchuk, 20, is expected to compete for a regular role with the Senators in 2026-27.

Logan Hensler, a 19-year-old defenseman selected 23rd overall in 2025, is recovering from knee ligament and ankle injuries sustained in February. He is expected to return to the Wisconsin lineup in the fall and is projected to arrive in the NHL in 2027-28.

Kasper Halttunen, a 21-year-old winger acquired from the Sharks on June 23, 2026, is seen as a potential power forward. He played 69 games with San Jose in the AHL last season. Halttunen is expected to start the season in Belleville (AHL) and is projected to reach the NHL in 2027-28.

Jaxon Cover, an 18-year-old winger selected 32nd overall in 2026, played 67 games with London in the OHL last season. Cover, who grew up playing roller hockey in the Cayman Islands, is expected to continue his development under coaches Mark and Dale Hunter and is projected for an NHL arrival in 2028-29.

Jonas Lagerberg Hoen, an 18-year-old winger selected 25th overall in 2026, missed most of last season due to a knee ligament tear, limiting him to 11 games. He recorded 16 points in nine games in Sweden’s top junior league and is expected to play in Sweden’s second professional division in 2026-27, with a projected NHL arrival in 2028-29.
